![]() ![]() However, the glass fiber woven fabric based panels exhibit a greater improvement when reinforced in the z-direction than the fiber glass mat based panels. It can be observed from the graph that the panels constructed from glass fiber mat are 3 to 4 times better at absorbing ballistic impact energy than the glass fiber woven fabric, regardless of their Z-direction reinforcement methodology. Results for multiple panels were averaged and are presented in Figure 5. After testing samples at velocities above their ballistic limit, the pre and post-impact velocities were used to calculate the kinetic energy of the projectile. ![]() The copper jacketed lead bullet is manufactured by the Hornady Manufacturing Company, Grand Island, NE, and part number 45177. The weight of the bullet is 14.9 g (230 grain) and the sabot 1.2 g for a combination total of 16.1 g. The projectile used for testing was a 1.145 cm (0.451 inch) diameter, 2.4 cm (0.945 inch) long, copper jacketed lead bullet with a rounded tip in a 1.371 cm (0.54 inch) outer diameter, 2.2 cm (0.866 inch) long plastic sabot. After loading the gun barrel, the solenoid valve switch was triggered to apply power and release the compressed gas and push the projectile towards the sample. ![]() The test sample was secured to the bracket located within the safety enclosure of the gas gun. Table 2 served as a guide for pressure vessel pressures and corresponding projectile velocities necessary to perform the experimental test shots. panels, yielding 4 test samples each for a total of 144 sample test areas, were manufactured according to the procedure in the previous section. ![]()
